Unemployed since last year, Jay Huckeba had applied for around a half dozen jobs around Las Vegas when the ongoing pandemic struck. He got no call-backs.
Huckeba, who previously worked at the inoperative KAOSnightclub at the Palms, said it’s currently difficult to look for jobs.
Fortunately, the anticipated opening of the Circa resort next month in downtown Las Vegas changed his story. Recently, Huckeba got a job as a senior operations manager for the company’s multi-level pool amphitheater space called Stadium Swim.
Circa is providing around 1,500 jobs at a time unemploymenthas spiked due to the economic rampage that the coronavirus pandemic has causedin Las Vegas.
Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered the closure of casinos and other non-essential businesses in mid-March to help combat the spread of the virus. While he allowed casinos to reopen in June, tourism is very low when compared with the pre-pandemic period.
Circa owner Derek Stevens said he was concerned about those who left Las Vegas. He added that he was still worried about his ability to hire enough workers for the new resort.
The first casino built downtown in 40 years hired 1,100 employees in mid-September. They included dealers, cocktail servers, and lifeguards. Circa plans to add around 400 more.
Huckeba, who relocated from Northern Nevada to Las Vegas 10years ago, said he was thrilled just to get an interview with the company, letalone a job opportunity.
He never lost hope or considered leaving the city. He saidLas Vegas is a strong city that came back from the 2008 recession stronger, contrary to people’s expectations.
Stevens, too, said he expects the city to rebound and bestrong after the pandemic. He said more and more people were coming to LasVegas.
Located on the site of the old Las Vegas Club, Circa willhave a 777-room, 35-story hotel tower and a casino that has a three-storysportsbook. The scheduled opening date is October 28.
Stevens said they have been “prepared, but there are always last minute things that are a little bit in flux.” The excitement and stress levels are currently rising, he added.
Besides Circa, Resorts World Las Vegas is also a new resortthat is slated to open soon. The $4.3 billion megaresort is under constructionon the northern part of the Strip. It hopes to hire nearly 6,000 employees, aResorts World spokeswoman said.
The Nevada Resort Association President and CEO Virginia Valentine said the two companies’ provision of several job opportunities will tremendously help Las Vegas recover economically.
She added that the opening of the world-class resorts willcertainly increase visitation to Las Vegas.
